In the early 1970s, James M. Olson began watching over the Great Lakes. As an attorney, advocate, and author, he pioneered the use of the Michigan Environmental Protection Act and the Public Trust Doctrine to protect the state's shorelines and water resources for public use and enjoyment. Public water rights for drinking, fishing, swimming, boating, and shoreline walks are upheld by his lasting legacy.
