John Martin was born in Essex County, Virginia, in 1756 and died at the Rock House on April 5, 1822. A soldier, officer, and patriot of the Revolution, he volunteered to fight for the independence of his country. He was also a member of the House of Commons and for many years served as presiding judge of the county court of Stokes County.
