This church is the second oldest continuously active Church of God in Louisiana. It began in 1897 by Robert H. Owens and was first named Welcome Church of God. Its first convert was James Harville, and early converts came from Pine Island Methodist and Mt. Pleasant Christian Church. W. H. Jackson was the first to be ordained pastor. The first board of trustees consisted of Frank Parker, W.H. Jackson, William Parker, Samuel Tippit, Daniel Williamson, and Elijah Williamson, and Nancy Peavy Tippit was the first Sunday school teacher. The first church house was built at Caney Creek in 1899, a second was built in 1906 at the present site of Welcome Cemetery, and a larger church house was built there in 1927. The first parsonage was built there in 1926 while H. S. Fulton was pastor. In 1930, Rev. J. Carver returned from a ministerial meeting at Hammond with two live oaks to plant in front of the parsonage. A new sanctuary was built there in 1937 while D. G. Trimble was pastor, and the present sanctuary was built in 1965 while J. R. Tackett was pastor, when the name was changed to Simpson Church of God. Electricity first came on April 12, 1940, through the work of J. Z. Merchant and C. H. Parker while Rev. Hull was pastor. In 1944, Rev. Merica began bus service, assisted by Rev. Schmucker of Simpson Baptist, to bring people to the church of their choice. In 1992, a tent revival began with the Assembly of God and Baptist churches, and that spirit of cooperation remains alive today in Simpson.
