North Mountain
Nature
North Mountain is a broad, high ridge on the eastern edge of Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains, spanning several counties and dominating nearby valleys. Its summit in Sullivan County is that county’s highest point, and its plateau, streams, and folded rock formations make it a notable natural feature within the Susquehanna watershed. The mountain’s history reaches from Seneca control and early frontier roads to settlement in the early 1800s and Civil War-era searches for draft evaders hiding on the ridge. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, lumbering and ice cutting reshaped the area. Today it remains known for remoteness, wildlife, hunting, and state game lands.
