Governors Park was constructed during the administration of Governor George Corley Wallace and dedicated to six distinguished people from Barbour County who served Alabama as governor: John Gill Shorter, 1861-63; William Dorsey Jelks, 1901-07; Braxton Bragg Comer, 1907-11; Chauncey Sparks, 1943-47; George Corley Wallace, 1963-67; and Lurleen Burns Wallace, 1967-71.
