Iverson Gate was named in honor of Brig. General Alfred Iverson, Jr., CSA. He became a first lieutenant in the First U. S. Cavalry in 1856. In 1861 he resigned his commission in the U. S. Army and joined the Confederacy as a Colonel. He was promoted to Brig. General in November 1862. He was in charge of a brigade of Wheeler’s Cavalry deployed on the Depot’s present site with the mission of protecting the Macon & Western Railroad, the main supply line. He was born at Clinton, Georgia, on February 14, 1829, and died on March 31, 1911.
