Jones Gap State Park in northern Greenville County preserves the headwaters of the Middle Saluda River and forms part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness with Caesars Head State Park. The gap was named for Solomon Jones, who built a toll road through it between 1840 and 1848, creating an important route between Greenville and Transylvania counties until newer highways replaced it. Modern preservation began in the 1950s and expanded through land purchases, donations, and grants, leading to the park’s opening in 1989. Its forests, streams, and elevations support diverse wildlife and recreation, while the Cleveland Fish Hatchery preserves another layer of local history.
