The Carter Brothers played an important role in Western history as the general contractors for the first six narrow gauge railroads in California. From 1874 to 1902 they built freight, passenger, cable, and street cars. Their plant became Newark's first industry, and their cable cars are still in operation on the hills of San Francisco.
