Born in Reading, Ben Austrian was a self-taught artist who won international recognition for his paintings of barnyard and woodland creatures, still lifes, and landscapes. He created the famed Bon Ami chick. He had studios in Paris and Florida and at Mount Penn, but the place he loved most was nearby Clovelly-at-the-Pinnacle, where he died at the age of fifty-one. He is buried here.
