Goodwin Stadium stood from 1936 to 1978 and was named for Garfield Goodwin, a past mayor of Tempe, a member of the Arizona State Teachers College Board of Education, and a receiver for the 1899 Tempe Normals football squad. That team defeated the University of Arizona at Carrillo Gardens Field in Tucson in the first contest between the schools on November 30, 1899. The west stands were built in 1936 and the east stands in 1941. Grady Gammage was president, Del E. Webb Construction Company was the contractor, L.M. Fitzhugh was the engineer, and the stadium had a capacity of 4,800 fans and 4,000 seats.
