Dead Stream Flooding State Wildlife Management Area is a protected wildlife area in northern Michigan along the Muskegon River near its source at Houghton Lake. Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, it spans about 1,024 acres, including the Dead Stream Flooding reservoir created when Reedsburg Dam was built in 1940 to ease flooding from Houghton Lake. Its shallow waters, wetlands, and surrounding state forest lands support fishing, paddling, bird watching, hunting, and rustic camping. A major reconstruction of Reedsburg Dam beginning in 2018 temporarily lowered water levels and dried some nearby wetlands before normal levels were gradually restored after completion in September 2020.
