Jay Mountain Wilderness Area is a protected forest preserve in Essex County, New York, within Adirondack Park. Located in the towns of Jay and Lewis, it is bounded on the south by Glen Road and otherwise largely by private land. The wilderness is named for Jay Mountain, its second-highest peak, while its highest summit is Saddleback Mountain, distinct from the better-known High Peaks summit of the same name. Known for steep mountains resembling those of the Hurricane Mountain Primitive Area, it is primarily used for backcountry hiking and backpacking. Only Jay Mountain has a marked trail; other summits usually require bushwhacking, with views across the AuSable Valley, Champlain Valley, and the High Peaks.
