Hurricane Mountain, a 3,688-foot summit near Keene on the northern side of New York’s Adirondack High Peaks region, is known less for great height than for its unusually wide views. Its open summit owes part of that panorama to early Adirondack survey work by Verplanck Colvin, who had the top cleared. From the mountain, clear-day views extend east along Lake Champlain to Vermont’s Green Mountains, while many Adirondack High Peaks appear from the south around to the northwest. At the summit stands the disused Hurricane Mountain Fire Observation Station, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 for its role in regional conservation and fire detection history.
