Mustang Peak is a 2,251-foot summit on the Diablo Range divide in Stanislaus County, part of the interior Coast Range landscape east of the Bay Area. Though modest in elevation, it is remembered through local legend connected to Joaquín Murrieta’s gang. According to that history, wild or stolen horses were kept at Paradise Flat, or Mustang Flat, then driven up the route now called Long Ridge Road to La Vereda del Monte, now County Line Road, north of the peak. There they were reportedly joined to a passing drove headed south toward Sonora, tying the summit to nineteenth-century California folklore, horse traffic, and old crossings of the Diablo Range.
