The Red River Museum preserves the cultural heritage of Powell County and the Red River area. Opened in July 1967 as the home of the Red River Historical Society and headquarters for the Kentucky Old Mill Association, it is housed in the restored old Clay City National Bank building. Its exhibits range from prehistoric artifacts to 19th century relics and include general store, post office, bank, service station, farm, railroad, doctor’s instrument, home spun industry, church, school, Native American Indian, rock and agate, blacksmith, iron millstone, and grindstone items, many of them on loan from local residents. The museum welcomes visitors, researchers, students, church groups, and scout troops without charge, with donations used for upkeep. Clay City, now a small village, once stood at the center of a vast industrial complex that began around 1800 as the Red River Iron Works, and after the iron industry declined, the area became a center of commercial logging, lumbering, and timber processing, with the 1890s marking Clay City’s log boom days.
