The Sundial is a 7,590-foot white Navajo Sandstone mountain in Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, rising about 3,600 feet above Zion Canyon and the Virgin River near the Towers of the Virgin. Its name came from a local practice in nearby Grafton, where residents used the mountain like a natural sundial to set their clocks, and Zion’s third superintendent, Preston P. Patraw, formally gave it that name. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names adopted the name in 1934. Surrounded by major sandstone formations, the peak is part of one of Zion’s most recognizable cliff and summit groupings.
