The West Temple is a 7,810-foot mountain in Zion National Park and the highest feature in Zion Canyon, making it one of the canyon’s defining landmarks. Its slopes drain into tributaries of the Virgin River, and its layered geology showcases Navajo Sandstone above older formations including Kayenta, Moenave, Chinle, and Moenkopi. The Paiute called it Temp-o-i-tin-car-ur, or “Mountain Without a Trail,” reflecting its steepness, while Mormon settlers knew it as Steamboat Mountain. John Wesley Powell applied the name West Temple in 1872, and it became official in 1934. It also draws climbers and stands out in Zion’s cold semi-arid landscape.
