In 1942, the U.S. Army shipped this M5 three-inch howitzer to Knoxville to replace a Civil War cannon that had been retired in 1902. The earlier Civil War gun was later added to the scrap pile and melted down during World War Two. In April 1948, this cannon was officially donated to the American Legion Post 168 and dedicated to all the veterans of Marion County who have served the country.
