The Parkin archeological site was preserved better than most because it was reoccupied during most of the 20th century. Residents who lived on the ancient village site in the 1900s came to call their neighborhood Sawdust Hill, or simply “The Hill.” Even though the site is no longer occupied, a sense of community can still be seen in the family and friends who visit. Many residents of “The Hill” attended services at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, and in 1995 members held a final prayer meeting in front of the old church before moving into a new building in downtown Parkin.
