Okeeheelee Park in Palm Beach County, Florida, grew from heavily altered strip-mined land into one of South Florida’s larger public parks, spanning more than 1,700 acres around two lakes. Proposed in 1973 as a nature park, it gained state funding, received its Seminole name meaning “pretty waters” in 1974, and opened its first major phase in 1982 before full completion in 1996 after decades of reclamation. Today it combines boating, sports fields, trails, golf, equestrian facilities, picnic areas, a dog park, and the Okeeheelee Nature Center, preserving natural habitat while serving as a major recreation and environmental education hub.
