Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach is Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest public garden, spanning 20 acres with 25 display gardens and more than 7,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from six continents. It grew from efforts by the county’s Cooperative Extension Service, evolving from unrealized fruit arboretum plans in the 1950s into a horticultural learning center in 1983 and a broader public-private partnership in the 1980s. Closely tied to public education, it showcases plants suited to South Florida while supporting conservation and practical gardening. After severe hurricane damage in 2004 and 2005, the garden was rebuilt and expanded with new themed spaces.
