Grand Canyon Skywalk is a glass-bottomed, horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge at Eagle Point in the Grand Canyon West area of Arizona, owned by the Hualapai Indian Tribe and opened in 2007 as the centerpiece of a broader tourism strategy. Built as a major engineering project, it projects out over a side canyon and was designed to carry large crowds, though access is limited in operation. Tribal leaders promoted it as a source of revenue for a reservation under severe economic strain, but the project also drew criticism over sacred ground, environmental impact, and large-scale development. Later business disputes added to the controversy, even as the attraction drew growing numbers of visitors.
