Mount Orient, a 955-foot mountain in Pelham near Amherst, rises on an upland plateau above the Connecticut River Valley in western Massachusetts. Though its summit is wooded, a lower south-facing ledge of exfoliating metamorphic rock offers broad views toward the Holyoke Range and the east-central Pioneer Valley, helping make it a longtime hiking destination for local residents and college students. The mountain is crossed by the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail and the Robert Frost Trail. It also has a notable conservation history: in 1909 Mabel Loomis Todd bought property there to protect it from commercial exploitation, and in 1960 Millicent Todd Bingham donated an 87-acre tract to Amherst College as the Mabel Loomis Todd Forest.
