Mount Shinn is a 10,995-foot peak in Fresno County, California, west of the Sierra Nevada crest, within the John Muir Wilderness and Sierra National Forest. Its runoff flows north toward Florence Lake through tributaries of the South Fork San Joaquin River, and the mountain rises sharply, gaining about 3,600 feet above the river in less than two miles. It was named for Charles Howard Shinn, a Sierra National Forest supervisor, Sierra Club charter member, and author. The name became official in 1925, and Francis A. Corey made the first recorded ascent on August 8, 1925. Pacific storms help give the mountain its alpine climate.
