Dinkey Lakes Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in California’s Sierra National Forest, about 45 miles northeast of Fresno. Created by the California Wilderness Act of 1984, it spans 30,000 acres of granite terrain shaped by glaciation, with forests, wet meadows, cirques, high summits, and 17 lakes. The area’s name is traditionally tied to a story about a dog called Dinkey, from which Dinkey Creek and later local names were said to derive. Known for its compact but varied 50-mile trail system, it supports hiking, climbing, fishing, skiing, and horseback riding, while permits and trailhead quotas help protect its high-country character.
