Established as Huntington High School in 1915 with Robert L. Fenton as principal, the school moved in December 1916 into a new building on the east side of Main Street at 100 North. Its first senior class, made up of eight girls and two boys, graduated in 1921, and the school became accredited by the American High School Association in 1922. At first it served only students from Huntington and Lawrence, then began receiving senior high students from Mohrland in 1924 and from Cleveland, Elmo, and Victor in 1925, with the first school buses entering service in 1927. By 1931 enrollment had reached 231, and the school moved into a larger building originally constructed in 1923 for Huntington Elementary on the west side of Main Street at Center Street. In February 1934 students voted to rename it North Emery High School, while classes continued to use the gymnasium and auditorium in the original building. A manual arts building was erected in 1936, and in 1952 the adjacent LDS meetinghouse was converted into an auditorium and assembly hall. Facing declining enrollments, North Emery High School and South Emery High School were consolidated into a single Emery County High School in 1962. The building then housed a junior high for several years before becoming an office building. During its 47-year history, the school was shaped by 16 principals, more than 100 teachers, and more than 2,000 students, and its academic, practical, athletic, musical, dramatic, social, and other activities prepared students for responsible citizenship and productive lives while serving as a center of interest for the northern Emery County community.
