The McDonald Fountain and Building was erected in 1931 and donated by Mary Julia Ledlie McDonald. Nearby, Jon Serl, born in 1894 and died in 1993, became one of America's foremost outsider artists. In his early years he was a vaudevillian, then worked in Hollywood in minor roles as a dancer, screenwriter, and extra under the stage name Jerry Palmer. After World War II he began painting in his distinctive expressionist style and completed more than 1,200 paintings. He moved to Lake Elsinore in 1970, where he lived in a ramshackle old house visited by friends and collectors until he died at the age of 99.
