Woodward Park in Tulsa grew from Helen Woodward’s allotment land into a forty-five-acre urban park, botanical garden, and arboretum after a legal dispute over the property ended in the city’s favor in 1929. Major development began in 1933 with New Deal labor and a design by landscape artist G. Burton Fox. The park developed into a major horticultural landscape with specialized spaces including the Tulsa Rose Garden, rock gardens, the Anne Hathaway Herb Garden, the Linnaeus Teaching Garden, and the Tulsa Arboretum. Its historic buildings, sculpture, and educational role helped earn listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
