Ruedi Reservoir
Science & Tech
Ruedi Reservoir is a mountain reservoir on the Fryingpan River in Colorado’s Western Slope, within White River National Forest near Basalt and Aspen. Built with Ruedi Dam between 1964 and 1968 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, it is part of the federal Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, helping offset water diverted across the Continental Divide while also serving West Slope needs. The reservoir stores about 102,000 acre-feet of water, with releases used mainly for municipal, industrial, and agricultural purposes. A 1985 hydroelectric plant at the dam supplies power to Aspen, and the reservoir and river below it are also important for recreation and fishing.
