George Mason owned about 60,000 acres along Panther Creek and Green River. He was the author of the Virginia Bill of Rights and Constitution in 1776, designed the Virginia State Seal, and served as a member of the Continental Congress in 1777 and the U.S. Constitutional Convention. A Virginian and a friend and neighbor of George Washington, he died in 1792 without visiting Kentucky. His grandson, George W. Mason, lived near here.
