Ebenezer Allen, Ethan Allen's cousin, made the first settlement on South Hero. From Ebenezer's tavern, Ethan Allen, one of the "heroes" for whom the islands were named, started homeward across the ice to Burlington on Feb. 11, 1789. Stricken en route, the Green Mountain Boy died the next day. The site is 3.5 miles south.
