The Log Cabin became the home of San Anselmo American Legion Post 179. Veterans of World War I, the Post Ladies Auxiliary, Boy Scout troops, and dedicated community volunteers built it. Construction began on April 23, 1933, and it was completed and dedicated on May 27, 1934. Funds for the building came from the Post Thrift Shop, turkey shoots, the Ladies Auxiliary, and San Anselmo community minded friends. An Americanized former German P.O.W. built the massive stone fireplace and Legion emblems. Its Dugout Bar received one of the first liquor licenses granted after Prohibition. Post 179 honors veterans of all American conflicts.
