Andre Guillebeau, a 1764 Huguenot immigrant born near Bordeaux, France, was among the group led by the Reverend Jean Louis Gilbert that sought religious freedom and settled at New Bordeaux, South Carolina, in the old Abbeville District from which McCormick County was formed. An American Revolution patriot, he fought as a private and sergeant and received a permanent hip wound that caused him to limp until his death. He served in the militia of South Carolina as a member of the Bordeaux Regiment, Abbeville County, under Captain Joseph Bouchillon from August 1779 to May 1782, and died in 1814 at age 75.
