Woodhull Mountain, a 2,359-foot summit in the Adirondacks of Herkimer County, is especially notable for the fire lookout tower that still stands at its top. Fire observation began there in September 1911 with a wooden tower, replaced in 1916 by a 50-foot Aermotor LL25 steel tower. This early steel model originally had no stairs, only an exterior rung ladder, and its access was later made safer with a wooden ladder and then a self-supporting staircase installed in 1936. The lookout served through the 1970 fire season before aerial detection reduced the need for such stations, and it remains open to the public except for the cab.
