Bald Mountain, officially named Rondaxe Mountain, is an Adirondack summit near Old Forge known for its popular hike and the fire tower on its top. It also holds a modest place in Adirondack history: surveyor Verplanck Colvin used it as a survey point in the 1870s and in 1886 proposed the name Mt. St. Louis, which never caught on. The mountain was officially renamed Rondaxe Mountain in 1912 to avoid confusion with another Bald Mountain in Croghan after a fire tower was built there. Its short, relatively easy climb and prominent tower have made it one of the region’s most accessible and visited summit destinations.
