Big Moose Lake is a glacial Adirondack lake in upstate New York at the head of the Moose River, within a relatively lightly developed part of Adirondack State Park. About three miles long, it became more accessible in the late 19th and early 20th centuries after the railroad arrived, bringing guides, camps, hotels, and seasonal summer lodges, including examples of the area’s palisade architectural style. Recreation remains central, with boating, hiking, winter sports, and trout fishing, while limited road access has helped preserve its shoreline. The lake is also linked to the Grace Brown murder, which inspired Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy.
