Disneyland, the original park of The Walt Disney Company in Anaheim, opened on July 17, 1955 as the only Disney park designed and built under Walt Disney’s direct supervision. Created from his idea of a place where adults and children could enjoy themselves together, it helped define the modern theme park through controlled themed environments, a hub-and-spoke layout, a surrounding berm, cleanliness, and visual storytelling. Built on 160 acres acquired in 1953, it opened after a famously chaotic televised debut. The park later expanded and became the center of a larger resort, while also reflecting broader cultural history and drawing world-leading attendance.
