Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in a landmark glass church long known as the Crystal Cathedral. Founded by Robert H. Schuller and his wife Arvella in 1955, the congregation grew from drive-in theater services to a major campus before opening the Philip Johnson and John Burgee-designed sanctuary in 1981. Internationally recognized through Schuller’s Hour of Power broadcasts, the ministry later entered bankruptcy during the Great Recession. The Diocese of Orange bought the campus in 2012, converted the building for Catholic worship while preserving its iconic exterior, and consecrated it as Christ Cathedral in 2019.
