Space Mountain, an indoor space-themed roller coaster in Disneyland's Tomorrowland, opened on May 27, 1977, as the park's second roller coaster and a major visual landmark with its white conical exterior. Conceived from Walt Disney's push for more thrill rides after the Matterhorn Bobsleds, the project was delayed for years before being adapted into a smaller Anaheim version after the first Space Mountain opened in Florida. The $20 million complex also added a stage, restaurant, and arcade. Repeated updates, including a major 2003–2005 rebuild and later themed overlays, kept it a signature attraction while preserving its central role in Tomorrowland.
