The Benjamin Ferguson Homestead and the Earl Ingram Homestead east of it were both built from the round granite core stones that cover the refuge hillsides, and both were acquired in the 1901 land lottery held at Fort Sill. They reflect the hard work, ingenuity, and craftsmanship of earlier generations. The Ferguson house was completed in 1927, and the Fergusons lived there until 1942. That year, the U.S. Army used eminent domain to acquire the Ferguson and Ingram Homesteads for an expansion of the adjacent Fort Sill artillery range, but fifteen years later the planned expansion was abandoned and the homesteads became part of the refuge. The Benjamin Ferguson Homestead remains a witness to regional pioneer history, and in 1981 it was listed on the National Historic Register for Historic Places as an excellent example of local architecture using locally available materials. The Ingram Homestead included the Midway gas station, about a quarter mile east of the house.
