Baring Mountain, or Mount Baring, is a prominent peak in Washington’s central Cascades near the Skykomish River, Barclay Lake, and U.S. Highway 2. Renamed in 1917 after earlier name changes involving nearby Mount Index, it was first recorded as climbed on July 28, 1897, by John Charlton and Albert H. Sylvester, though an earlier Native American ascent may have occurred. The mountain is notable for its abrupt rise from low ground and its imposing Northeast Face, which has made it an important technical climbing objective. That face was first climbed on July 13, 1960, and Baring later also became known as a site for BASE and wingsuit jumping.
