Sullivan County preserves and presents a wide range of local history and landscapes, including the Sullivan County Historical Society complex in Laporte, where four buildings house research materials and artifacts and where the Baldwin House, built in 1850, was the first home erected on Lot #1 in the newly formed 1847 county seat; the ghost town of Celestia, founded in 1850 by Peter Armstrong as a divine commune to await the Second Coming of Christ, where he deeded four square miles to God, the settlement never grew beyond a few buildings, and after Armstrong's death in 1887 it faded back into wilderness; the history of Eagles Mere through museums on glass making, a Chautauqua, early resort hotels, and a narrow-gauge railroad; the Endless Mountains War Memorial Museum in Sonestown, with military artifacts from the American Revolutionary War to the present, especially World War II and the home front; the industrial rise and decline of Jamison City, where the Bloomsburg & Sullivan Railroad reached North Mountain in 1888, a tannery and lumber operations expanded, and by 1925 only remnants remained; the ghost town of Ricketts, a lumber-mill company town of more than 800 residents that grew after railroad completion in 1893; and three Burr Arch Truss covered bridges built in 1850. The county also includes fairgrounds with roots in 1852, forests, parks, overlooks, conservancy lands, and major scenic places such as Worlds End State Park, Loyalsock State Forest, High Knob Overlook, and Ricketts Glen State Park with its waterfalls and old-growth timber.
