Sonoma Botanical Garden in California’s Mayacamas Mountains grew from a former sandstone quarry and fire-scarred landscape into a nonprofit education and research garden with one of the largest scientifically documented collections of wild-source Asian plants in North America and Europe. After Jane Davenport Jansen bought the property in 1968, its transformation accelerated in the 1980s through work with Roger Warner and later a conservation-focused partnership with Lord Howick. Named Quarryhill Botanical Garden in 1988, it launched collecting expeditions and built a nursery for wild-collected seed. Its living collection now includes about 25,000 wild-origin plants representing more than 2,000 species.
