Near Glen Ellen, California, Jack London’s Beauty Ranch preserves the core of the property where he tried to build a life as both writer and rancher after buying abandoned winery land in 1905 and expanding it in the following years. The site includes the Winery Cottage where he lived and died, the ruins of the grand Wolf House that burned in 1913 before it could be occupied, the later House of Happy Walls built by Charmian London, and the couple’s graves. Given to California by 1959 and dedicated as a park in 1960, it preserves more than 800 acres tied to London’s final years and ambitions.
