First settled in 1792, the town was incorporated as Port William in 1794. In 1838, when Carroll County was formed, the Kentucky Legislature changed the town's name to Carrollton. Both the county and the town honored Charles Carroll of Carrollton of Maryland, a bold signer of the Declaration of Independence.
