Mark Trail Wilderness is a federally protected wild area in the mountains of northern Georgia within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Established in 1991 and managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, it encompasses 16,400 acres of high ridges, forested terrain, and mountain streams. Its name comes from Mark Trail, the outdoor newspaper comic strip created by Ed Dodd, giving the landscape an unusual connection to American popular culture. The wilderness includes Horsetrough Mountain, its highest point, and Horsetrough Falls near the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River, while a long stretch of the Appalachian Trail highlights its recreational as well as conservation value.
