Mount Erebus is a prominent 3,112-metre summit near Alberta’s Tonquin Valley in Jasper National Park, close to the Continental Divide and surrounded by notable neighboring peaks. Formed from Cambrian sedimentary rock later pushed eastward during the Laramide orogeny, it reflects the geological forces that shaped much of the Canadian Rockies. Its subarctic climate, with severe cold and snow, supports the Fraser and Eremite glaciers, while runoff drains into the Astoria and Whirlpool rivers within the Athabasca watershed. Named in 1916 by surveyor Morrison P. Bridgland for its dark cliffs, it was first climbed in 1924 and officially adopted as a place name in 1935.
