Throne Mountain is a prominent 3,120-metre summit in Jasper National Park in Alberta’s Canadian Rockies, named in 1916 by Dominion Land Surveyor Morrison P. Bridgland because its shape resembled a chair or throne. Its first recorded ascent came in 1926, when J. W. A. Hickson and Howard Palmer reached the summit with guide J. Weber, and the name was formally adopted in 1935. The mountain is made of sedimentary rock deposited between the Precambrian and Jurassic periods, later thrust eastward during the Laramide orogeny. Draining into the Astoria and Athabasca rivers, it is also marked by a harsh subarctic alpine climate.
