Outpost Peak is a 2,880-metre double-summit mountain in Jasper National Park’s Tonquin Valley, with the southwest summit higher though some maps label the northeast top. Named in 1921 by the Interprovincial Boundary Survey and officially adopted in 1935, it fits the castle-themed names of the Ramparts area and rises like a lookout above the valley. Formed from Cambrian sedimentary rock later thrust eastward over younger layers during the Laramide orogeny, it reflects the processes that built the Canadian Rockies. Its runoff reaches the Astoria and Athabasca rivers, and its subarctic setting supports glaciers on several sides.
