The Emlenton Planing Mill at 309 Main Street, begun in 1866 by several investors and becoming the sole property of Uriah Sloan in 1878, became the town’s second oldest business in continual operation. After a disastrous fire leveled its structures in the 1940s, it was soon rebuilt and continued supplying building needs to the area. The Emlenton (Crawford) Foundry, begun in 1854 and moved to 212 Main Street in 1873, adapted to the area’s changing economy under David Crawford and his sons by producing machinery and supplies that shifted from farming and household tools to oil well supplies, and by adding a machine shop to make replacement parts for early motorcars. The foundry building was razed in 1977.
